John Newton serves as Chief Economist for the United States Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry for Ranking Member John Boozman. As Chief Economist, Dr. Newton is responsible for policy and economic analysis issues for the committee and for advising the Ranking Member on the economic implications of policy proposals to the agricultural, nutrition and forestry sectors.

Prior to his work on the committee, Dr. Newton served as the Chief Economist for the American Farm Bureau Federation, the nation’s largest general farm organization, and held roles on the American Farm Bureau Insurance Services, Inc. advisory board, the National Business Economics Issues Council and USDA’s Agricultural Trade Advisory Committee for Trade in Animals and Animal Products and Advisory Committee on Agriculture Statistics. Newton is a two-time winner of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association’s Distinguished Extension Program award.

Newton is a Kentucky native and holds two Masters and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. In 2021, Newton received the distinguished alumni award from The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Newton and his family live in Washington, DC.
