Dr. Gulcan Onel is an Associate Professor in the Food and Resource Economics Department at the University of Florida. Originally from Izmir, Türkiye, Dr. Onel earned her Ph.D. in Economics from North Carolina State University in 2011.
Dr. Onel's research is centered on agricultural demand analysis, farm labor, and rural well-being. Her work has significantly contributed to understanding the effects of market frictions and economic policies on the demand for agricultural commodities and inputs. Her research on the impact of immigration on farm labor availability provides critical insights for policymakers and stakeholders.
Throughout her career, Dr. Onel has secured competitive grant funding from both public and private sources. She is the Principal Investigator on a USDA grant focused on labor risk management for small- and medium-sized farms within the context of evolving immigration policies. Additionally, she is a Co-Principal Investigator on an NSF grant examining human-robot collaboration in manufacturing and its implications for human labor markets. Dr. Onel's exceptional interdisciplinary collaborations have earned her the Interdisciplinary Research Leaders Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
