Speaker Bio

Dr. Brenda Berumen has been working in the field of occupational health and safety for almost a decade and has focused her research and long-term public health practitioner goals on improving health outcomes among vulnerable worker populations, specifically Hispanic/Latino immigrants employed in the United States. As part of her commitment to Hispanic/Latino workers’ health and safety, she has worked on projects utilizing mobile technologies to create and administer safety training to workers in high-risk occupational sectors and sought funding for projects focused on improving health and safety outcomes among vulnerable worker populations. In addition to her expertise in the fields of occupational health and safety, Dr. Berumen has a background in health disparities and has worked to bridge some of the gaps in current occupational health research on Hispanic/Latino worker populations by focusing on the impacts of cultural and acculturative factors on health and injury risks. Through her research Dr. Berumen has explored acculturative stressors impacting Hispanic/Latino farmworker populations, focusing on how these stressors affect occupational safety practices, healthcare utilization and access, and beliefs/perceptions of mental health outcomes and service utilization among Hispanic/Latino farmworkers.
